Event Summary

Starbucks in Philly, One Year Later: What Have We Learned? Where Do We Go From Here?

Melissa DePino and Michelle Saahene first met at Starbucks in Philadelphia on April 2, 2018, when they witnessed two innocent black men being arrested for not buying a coffee. Michelle, a black woman, spoke in defense of the men while Melissa, a white woman, tweeted a video of the incident, which went viral with over 13 million views. The result: Starbucks closed its stores for a day to train every employee on racial sensitivity. And Michelle and Melissa - once strangers, now dear friends and co-advocates for racial justice - went on to create From Privilege to Progress, a national movement that calls on allies to #ShowUp against racism on social media and in their everyday lives.

On April 2, Inquirer columnist Jenice Armstrong will interview Melissa and Michelle about the conversation they started that day and now continue via social media campaigns and speaking engagements to create awareness and inspire action.  They will be joined by Chad Dion Lassiter, executive director of Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission; Asa Khalif, organizer, Black Lives Matter; and Abdul-Aliy Muhammad, founder, Black and Brown Workers Cooperative.

Admission is free but advanced registration is encouraged as space is limited. Light bites will be served.
